I have been teaching what I have call Loud Meditations since Covid. We probably needed them way before that, but the need became more obvious then. When cultural and personal stress levels reach a certain level, it is very hard (and I would add potentially dangerous for some) to ask someone to sit still and be silent. What can happen in that silent space is that people tend to enter into the fray of mental agitation with recurrent negative or fear-based thoughts that spiral them into more anxiety, and then perhaps they dissociate from the pain and stress they are experiencing. Because I teach a wide variety of people in each class, I am choosing practices that I believe work for most people.
For me, Loud Meditations are ones that include making sounds or movements that support the release of stress and leave the practitioner with a sense of aliveness and well-being. For the next 6 weeks of summer, I am offering a meditation course based on the sounds and movements of Qi Gong. Qi Gong is a system of movement, breathing and energy cultivation developed by the Chinese as a healing art perhaps 4000 years ago. There are 6 sounds and many movements that we will explore during the course including seated and standing practices. The sounds resonate deep into the organs of the body and the related movements make the experience more effective and obvious. Most people will feel refreshed, open and vibrant with more creative insights by the end of each class.
